High-Functioning

Anxiety & Depression

What are High-Functioning Anxiety and Depression?

High-Functioning Anxiety and Depression are not formal clinical diagnoses, but rather descriptive terms that have gained traction in recent years to name a familiar internal struggle among many high-achieving individuals. Despite the absence of these terms in the official diagnostic manuals, they have resonated with professionals who maintain outward success and productivity while silently coping with anxiety or depressive symptoms just beneath the surface.

The concept of “high-functioning” reflects individuals who appear confident, organised, and capable, often excelling in demanding roles or maintaining busy, successful lives. However, inwardly, they may battle constant worry, hidden sadness, feelings of emptiness, or chronic self-doubt. The pressure to perform, achieve, and meet high standards may mask the real emotional distress, making it harder for them—and those around them—to recognize when support is needed.

High-functioning anxiety and depression can be difficult to identify. Those affected frequently dismiss their symptoms since their outward achievements “don’t match” their internal experiences. This pattern is especially prevalent among executives, leaders, and other high-performing professionals, who may fear stigma, judgment, or risking their reputation for admitting vulnerability. The recognition of these labels in the mental health field is growing, as practitioners and clients alike realise that thriving outside doesn’t always mean well-being inside.

Is your success built on silent struggle, invisible to everyone but you?

High-Functioning Anxiety and Depression can feel like constantly balancing on a wire: outwardly composed, always achieving, yet privately weighed down by worry, fatigue, or that nagging sense that something important is missing. Even as you lead and deliver, your own satisfaction and peace remain just out of reach.

In our sessions, we’ll create a safe, judgment-free space to explore what you really feel beneath the surface. You’ll have time to slow down, reflect, and rediscover parts of yourself beyond perfectionism or relentless drive.

My approach is rooted in Depth Therapy, which means looking beyond symptoms to help you understand, process, and shift the deeper patterns behind your depression and/or anxiety. I will help you reconnect with purpose, recover vitality, and move from just coping to genuinely thriving—at work and in your life.

About Kathleen

Hi, I’m Kathleen, the founder of Depth & the City.

I hold an MBA from London Business School and spent over two decades in leadership in the tech industry. Despite a successful career, I experienced burnout and a profound loss of meaning—challenges that inspired me to become a Depth Therapist.

I believe Depth Therapy is especially powerful for Executives and High-Achieving Professionals facing emotional and psychological struggles. Cognitive approaches alone only scratch the surface, and therapy that offers just listening and gentle reflection risks keeping you stuck in the same patterns. The unconscious mind, if ignored, will continue to influence you in ways you may not understand. Depth Therapy offers a way to engage with these hidden layers, opening the door to profound transformation.

How Depth Therapy Works

Depth Therapy is not about quick fixes or checklists. You won’t find worksheets or rigid tools here - you are treated as a thinking, feeling adult with a complex inner life. The work we do goes beyond cognition — we engage emotions and soul, honouring the full spectrum of your experience. You’ll be invited to explore the unconscious parts of yourself, which are inherently unknowable and mysterious. This exploration requires curiosity and creativity as much as insight.

The space we create together offers more time and room for you to regulate and reflect — it might be one of the few places in your life where you can pause, wonder, and even get things wrong without pressure. If you’re open to it, we might use additional tools like drawing, guided meditations, visualisation, or dreamwork to deepen the process. This is about slow, meaningful transformation, not a race to resolution.
